I was disappointed with Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in terms of it’s coffee shops. It looks like the American influence has taken hold and most coffee shops are Starbucks clones.
Highlands Coffee is the local Starbucks equivalent with 40 stores across Vietnam, the coffee is ok but it does nothing to stand out across the world Market. Trung Nguyen is the market leader in Vietnam with over 1000 outlets. The good news, there is not a Starbucks in sight the only chains I noticed were Gloria Jeans and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (US chain).
What I failed to find was a good Indy coffee place doing something different to the Market. I guess it’s just like the UK 5 years ago and that means their is an opportunity in a Market like that.
